Roaming Charges Being Reintroduced For UK Mobile Customers

Mobile users should check what fees they could face before travelling abroad this year.

UK mobile networks are reintroducing roaming charges for new and upgrading customers who will face £2-a-day costs to use data and make calls within the EU.

EE roaming charges were reinstated on January 1 2022 following an announcement last June.

Vodafone announced in August that roaming charges will return on January 6 2022 and Three announced in September last year confirmed that fees will return from May 23.

Customers who took out a mobile contract before the roaming changes were announced will not be affected.

Some of the networks will offer customers multi-day options to reduce roaming costs, for example EE will not be charging a daily fee for users who pay £10 a month for Roam Abroad.

Vodafone’s alternative will charge £1 a day for 8-day or 15-day multipasses, but Three is yet to announce roaming passes.

O2 has changed its “fair use” policy – this caps the amount of your UK data allowance you can use for free while roaming in Europe.

Ernest Doku, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com has urged mobile users to check if they will be affected by the changes.

“UK customers travelling to the EU will have to pay £2 a day for access to data and minutes they have already paid for,” he said.

“If you’re going on holiday or travelling abroad for a longer time, you can save money by paying for multi-day passes with Vodafone, or Roam Abroad with EE,” Doku added.

“If you’re an existing customer of EE, Vodafone or Three, check your contract to see whether these charges apply to you. If you signed up prior to specific dates, you should be safe.”

If you’re heading abroad this year, its worth checking with your network what roaming charges may come your way and also considering other options such as an eSIM plan or using the hotel or local cafe WiFi.
