Remember FarmVille on Facebook? It’s time to say goodbye.

The barn doors are closing after 11 years

Just when we thought 2020 couldn’t be any more turbulent, Facebook have announced that the beloved game, FarmVille, will be closing its gates for good on 31st December 2020. Unfortunately, FarmVille is stopping due to changes with Adobe Flash (which powers the game), as this will no longer be supported on certain browsers. Due to these changes, Facebook are ending their support for Flash games on their platform.

What about all my animals?

Zynga, the creators of game, commented on FarmVille ending saying, “We’re aware that many of you have been with us since the very beginning, helping to build an incredible global community of players over the years who’ve enjoyed this game just as much as we have. For that we say thank you.”

For many, the news of FarmVille ending may cause feelings of nostalgia and sadness alike. This legendary social farming game dominated Facebook and iOS alike for the past 11 years, and was undoubtedly one of Facebook’s earliest gaming successes, although no longer as popular as it once was.

For many people in life, their time online was controlled by the two ‘F’s’: Facebook and FarmVille. Everyone had FarmVille, or you at least knew one person that played the game. Your Facebook homepage would be flooded with FarmVille updates and notifications, whether you liked it or not, with the daily notification from your great aunt who had gifted your farm a brand-new squash. Who would have thought one could get such enjoyment from mastering the skills of cropping, herding sheep and breeding horses virtually?

FarmVille‘s ending is bittersweet, as, during its most popular stages, it generated up to 10% of Facebook’s revenue. It’s average player count at its most popular time surpassed 80 million avid players a few months after its launch. There are more than 400 million active Facebook users, so that means 1 in every 5 users plays (or have played) Farmville throughout their Facebook lives. Most interesting of all, the game even appealed to real life, actual farmers. According to The New York times, FarmVille farmers outnumbered real farmers in the US by 80 to 1, with many actual farmers reporting playing the game.

As the virtual sun sets and as FarmVille ends, don’t hang up your tools just yet. Zynga have said that other FarmVille games will continue to operate if you’d like to play on either iOS or Android.
