Sony have announced three new phones for 2019

Sony brought their X-game to Mobile World Congress this year, announcing not one, but three new Sony Xperia smartphones for 2019; the Xperia 1, Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus.  Sony phones are known for being reliable and innovative, with Sony being one of the first to start waterproofing phones, and this year’s launches are no different when it comes to creative new design ideas.

In a world where mobile phones increasingly look similar, it’s refreshing to see Sony playing around with new designs that offer something genuinely different from what else is out there.

The standout feature on all three models is in the display, where Sony have opted for a 21:9 aspect ratio screen.  21:9 is the same aspect ratio that is used in cinemas so you can see Sony’s angle here, their positioning the new XZ series as the ideal choice for watching video. This is of particular relevance as more and more video is now being filmed in 21:9, not just for the cinema.

Cinema screens

Cinema-style aspect ratio aside, Sony has worked with it’s TV team (and they know a thing or two about television screens) to produce a stunning display on all three models. On the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus, with 6 inch and 6.5 inch displays, these displays look great, but it’s on the flagship Xperia 1 where this screen knowledge really gets shown off. The Xperia 1 packs a 21:9 6.5 inch 4K HDR screen which just looks stunning. This becomes really apparent when you’re looking at your photos, or YouTube and Netflix videos.

It’s such a sharp screen so you can see every tiny detail thanks to the 4K and HDR spec of the display.

The phones may look a bit long due to the 21:9 screen but it’s ideal for video and any compatible apps that support displaying two apps at the same time.

The Xperia 1 is also packing Dolby Atmos to add impressive audio to that screen.

Cameras

Sony are renowned for upping their rivals when it comes to megapixel count, despite their resistance so far to venture into multiple-lens camera designs.  Here though, the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus have dual rear cameras and the Xperia 1 has three rear cameras.

The Xperia 10’s pair are 13MP and 5MP, the Plus gets 12MP and 8MP. Both allow for that nice portrait effect where the object in the foreground is sharp and the background is blurred.

The Xperia 1’s triple camera set up includes three 12MP sensors that have different focal lengths. You get a regular wide lens, a telephoto lens and an ultra-wide lens. This allows for much better photos regardless of your subject. For the camera designs, the team at Sony got their CineAlta team involved too – these are the guys that make cameras used for making Hollywood movies.

The Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are available right now at Direct Mobiles. And the flagship Xperia 1 will be arriving in a month or so’s time.

Sony have included a nice side-mounted fingerprint scanner which works really fast. There’s no wireless charging included but with good reason – wireless charging increases the thickness of a phone and Sony wanted to keep these nice and thin.  For those looking for a brilliant screen, great sound and a semi-professional slant to their mobile photography, this trio are well worth checking out.
