2019 is officially going to be the year 5G starts to roll-out across the UK. EE have announced they are launching 5G within 16 UK cities during 2019, starting with the busiest locations across London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester as phase one of their launch.
EE have chosen the busiest areas in the six launch cities, which include Hyde Park in London, Manchester Arena, Belfast City Airport, the Welsh Assembly, Edinburgh Waver;y train station and Birmingham’s Bullring. These areas get pretty crowded so 5G’s reliable data connection should prove to be a real benefit – even 4G suffers a bit nowadays in crowded areas.
In addition to the six launch cities, EE will also launch 5G across the busiest parts of ten more UK cities: Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Bristol.
You want a 5G smartphone with that?
A 5G network is going to need some 5G smartphones too, so expect announcements from Samsung, Apple, Huawei and rest very soon. EE will also launch a 5G Home Router with external antenna which means 5G could well start to replace traditional broadband services in some areas too.
Marc Alera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division, said: “Adding 5G to the UK’s number one 4G network will increase reliability, increase speeds, and keep our customers connected where they need it most. This is another milestone for the UK and for our network journey – we’ll keep evolving as we move to one, smart network for our customers. We have an ambition to connect our customers to 4G, 5G or WiFi 100% of the time.”
There is more 4G to come too
EE continues to upgrade 4G sites as part of its overall network improvement, which includes turning 3G signal into 4G to enable 4G in more places. Plus, the 4G roll-out continues in rural areas, following the 350 new sites EE are built in 2018 alone.
EE won the RootMetrics Best Network award for the 5th year in a row in 2018, will 2019 prove to be another success?
