Apple have taken to the stage and announced their new iPhone SE model, the third-generation of it’s popular budget range.

We say ‘budget’ but how budget of course depends on how much you’re prepared to spend on your iPhone. In short, this one sits at the lower end of Apple’s smartphone portfolio, below the iPhone 11 and 13 series but above the 7 and 8. It brings with it a number of flagship features, two of the biggest ones being 5G and the new A15 processor.

An improved battery life is also part of the headline spec, making for a nice upgrade over the previous iPhone SE from 2020. Apple claim the bigger battery will give users up to 15 hours of video playback, up to 10 hours of streaming video playback, and up to 50 hours of audio playback. Compare that the to the old SE which delivered up to 13 hours of video playback, up to 8 hours of streaming video playback, and up to 40 hours of audio playback.

Still not quite as much juice as the iPhone 13, but hey, this model is for those that want something more affordable, not the very best specifications.

Good news for physical Home button fans – the new iPhone SE 3 retains this feature and supports Touch ID. In fact, it looks near identical to the previous model, which is no bad thing as this design remains one of the most popular and pocket-friendly iPhone form factors.

The new iPhone SE 2022 is available in midnight, starlight and red, and has a 4.7 inch Retina HD screen. It an all glass body, with Apple saying (as usual) this is the “toughest glass in a smartphone on both the front and back.” It’s the same glass as that on the back of the iPhone 13.

The new iPhone SE also includes IP67 dust and water resistance which should help increase it’s longevity.

Round the back, one 12-megapixel rear camera is included with an updated camera system, similar to that of the iPhone 13, with Photographic Styles, Smart HDR 4 and Deep Fusion added.  But no Night Mode. For that, you’ll want the iPhone 11 or iPhone 13.

Regarding the construction of the new SE, it’s partially made with recycled materials. It uses “100-percent recycled rare earth elements in the Taptic Engine and audio magnets, 100-percent recycled tungsten in the Taptic Engine, and 100-percent recycled tin in the solder of the main logic board.” The company also reduced it’s plastic packaging but removing the outer plastic wrap.
