Nokia Launch a £199 5G Phone You Can Repair Yourself

The Nokia G42 5G has a number of replaceable parts

Nokia has unveiled its latest smartphone, the Nokia G42 5G, targeting budget and environmentally-conscious consumers in the UK. Priced at £199, this device offers an affordable option for those looking to access 5G connectivity but notably, Nokia has placed an emphasis on user repairability, allowing owners to take control of their device’s maintenance and repairs.

By encouraging owners to take charge of their smartphone’s maintenance and repairs, Nokia seeks to reduce reliance on professional repair services and also reduce the cost. This approach aligns with the growing trend towards sustainable practices in the mobile tech industry and contributes to reducing electronic waste.

G42 owners will be able to order a number of replacement parts from Nokia’s repair partner iFixit.  Parts start from £5, with a replacement display costing £44.99, a battery £22.99 and a charging port for £18.99.

“The G42 is a continuation of our repairability journey which is now a fundamental part of the way we design smartphones.” said Lars Silberbauer, CMO of HMD Global (the company that owns the Nokia brand).

The Nokia G42 5G features a 6.5-inch HD+ display, providing users with a decent-sized screen for multimedia. Powered by a MediaTek processor, it claims to offer sufficient performance for day-to-day tasks and multitasking.

The smartphone incorporates a triple-camera setup, including a 48-megapixel main camera, enabling users to capture detailed photos and videos. With a 5,000mAh battery, Nokia says G42 owners will get a three-day battery life, along with 5G data speeds (if you’re in a 5G area), plus there’s a guaranteed three years of software updates to keep the device secure and running smoothly.

The Nokia G42 5G stands out as one of the more affordable smartphone options for UK consumers, and with DIY repairs costing less than the average flagship smartphone, should encourage users to keep using it longer too.
