Spotify now has 200 million active users

Spotify now has over 200 million active users globally.

Announced at CES in Las Vegas last week by it’s global head of communications, Dustee Jenkins; this news means that the music streaming service has added 20 million new active users in the last six months.  The figure was 180 million at the end of Q2 2018 and 191 million at the end of Q3.

This means that Spotify is now twice as big as its nearest rival.  About 87 million of those users are paying subscribers.  The others are on the free ad-supported service.

Spotify’s focus has always been on growth, with the belief that the bigger the audience, the more lucrative music deals it can secure and the more that Spotify will be established as the standard go-to music service for streaming across all platforms.

“We’ve said all along, we want to focus on growth,” said Jenkins at CES.

“We believe in being a profitable company, but first and foremost we have to grow and get to regions of the world that still don’t have Spotify.

“There are still parts of the United States where Spotify is not widely used.”

Spotify isn’t profitable yet but it’s continued growth can’t be ignored.  It’ll be interesting to see whether they can moneytise the service further to turn a profit over the next couple of years.
