Netflix is testing cheaper mobile-only price plan

Netflix, the home of bingeable TV is testing a reduced price mobile-only subscription as it looks to tap into new markets and increase it’s number of subscribers.

It’s understandable that some users never watch Netflix on a TV (many don’t even own a TV), instead choosing to get their It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fix via their mobile phone.

According to an article from TechCrunch, Netflix’s first confirmed test is in Malaysia, where they are trialling a mobile-only tier that costs RM17, or about £3 a month.  That’s about half the price of the current Basic package.  There are apparently similar trials being run in other countries, although Netflix hasn’t confirmed where.  If it’s a success, there’s the chance it may be rolled out further but nothing is confirmed yet.

You can understand why Netflix may be testing these new mobile-only plans.  People are spending more time consuming content on their smartphones and less time watching TV screens, so if you can appeal to the pockets of those that digest 100% of their content via mobile then they’re more likely to try the service and stick around.

Do you mainly watch Netflix on your TV, laptop or mobile? Would you choose a mobile-only plan if it was available? Let us know in the Comments.
