Drop testing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

iPhone 8 drop test

Want to know if the new iPhone 8 can survive an 8-foot drop?

If you own an iPhone, you’ve no doubt experienced that rapid inhalation of breath as you freeze, realising you’ve just dropped your iPhone on the floor.  Not something we like to do too often although the cracked screen is a common sight amongst iPhone owners.  With glass front AND back on the new iPhone 8, it potential adds more broken glass opportunities for those not wrapping the phone in a case (or bubble-wrap).

So the good folk at EverythingApplePro decided to drop their new iPhone 8 on the floor many times to see just how tough the new phone is, or isn’t.  Apple claim it’s the toughest glass ever in a smartphone.  They put the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus up against the iPhone 7 Plus.

How did they do?  The full video is below (rather them, than us).  In summary though, the iPhone 8 Plus is pretty tough, if you drop it from a low height.  From around waist height, the iPhone 8 landed on it’s face, side and back and survived.  A bit of a dent on the site, but nothing shattered, even when it was dropped face down.  The iPhone 7 Plus screen was cracked after the first drop on its back.

Drop the iPhone 8 Plus from the height of 6 to 7 feet and the backed smashed with multiple cracks  on the screen.

So how did they all fare? The video is below, but in short the iPhone 8 Plus is pretty solid, if dropped from a low height. From about waist high, the iPhone 8 landed on its face, side and back (yes, we feel sick too just thinking about it) and survived. A slight dent, but nothing shattered: even when it dropped face down. The iPhone 7 Plus? The screen was a goner after one drop on its back.

But when dropping the iPhone 8 Plus from a higher height — about six to seven feet — the back shattered into the familiar spiderweb pattern.

You can watch the full video below.  It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Apple have had a glass-backed phone, the iPhone 4s also sported the same design (albeit without many of the iPhone 8’s features).  The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are gorgeous-looking phones, packed with features but with more glass, it’ll pay to give some thought to how you handle and protect your phone.
