The rumours have run amok for months, but now Apple has launched the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, so here are all the details of the next generation phone.

At an event in California, Apple previewed two new iPhones – the iPhone 7 and big screen iPhone 7 Plus.

As per many predictions, two new colours are being introduced – black and a darker jet black finish. There will also be silver, gold and rose gold colour options.

The camera now includes advanced optical image stabilisation and a six element lens to improve photos and video in low light conditions.

iPhone 7 boasts a higher definition 12 MP rear camera and a 7 MP front camera. There is also new true tone flash technology for both phones with two extra LEDs.

For just the iPhone 7 Plus, there is a dual camera, which allows for a 2 x optical zoom and a 10 x digital zoom for photos and 6 x for videos.

This could make the iPhone 7 Plus very attractive for mobile photographers and is one of the stand-out features of the launch.

The new retina display is 25 per cent brighter with 1334 by 750 pixels for iPhone 7 and 1920 by 1080 pixels for the 7 Plus. The display is optimised for 3D touch to give even greater fingertip control.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are the toughest iPhones Apple has ever made. They now have IP67 dust and water resistance, which means they can be immersed in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes.

The new iPhone has an A10 chip, which makes it twice as fast as the iPhone 6. Battery life is better and the longest for any iPhone.

The most talked about feature of the newest iPhone has been predicted for some time – for the iPhone 7, there will be no traditional headphone jack. This means that you will need to use the supplied adapter to plug your existing headphones into the lightning power slot. It also means you can’t listen to music and charge the phone at the same time, although there is an optional dock, which will allow you to do that. Apple is also launching wireless bluetooth head phones called Airpods, which point at a wireless future for Apple devices.

For the first time, iPhone 7 has stereo speakers, which are twice as loud as the iPhone 6S and offer a better sound.

For the iPhone 7, Apple has got rid of the 16GB entry level of storage – many had called for this for some time, as increasingly powerful phones need greater storage.

The new three tiers of iPhone storage will be 64GB, 128GB and 256GB with plans priced accordingly.

Although, there are no revolutionary changes on iPhone 7, there is plenty to attract Apple fans.

The addition of stereo and the move towards wireless sound plus a greatly improved camera, especially for the dual-camera iPhone 7 Plus, will please music fans and mobile photographers.

All round performance improvements plus the sleek new colours also keep the iPhone looking good and working well.
